anna luna is from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and came up around boysinblush and the Midwest circle that press keeps grouping into the electroclash revival. Her music shares the blown-out production and pop instincts of that scene, but carries a more romantic and gothic sensibility—like if Snow Strippers were photographed by Halle Jean March.

The show was put on by startnowchangelater and pretty but wicked, two of the promoters at the center of this scene in LA right now. It took place in a DTLA warehouse normally used for raves and DJ sets. The room felt familiar at first. Avalon and 10cust opened with DJ sets, then Ren G played live as the crowd filled in. Then anna luna walked out and a full curtain of water started falling behind her. When the blue backlights came on you could see every drop. The water broke each beam into streaks around her. The backlight caught the edges of her hair, white ruffled dress and lace stockings while her face often stayed in shadow.

She’s a very physical performer, and the lighting made each movement part of the image. She spent much of the set at the lip of the stage, crouching at eye level with the front row, leaning over the crowd, and singing through her hair. As she turned or leaned back, the light picked up a different part of her face, hair, or dress. Every pose changed what the crowd could see, so the stage never settled into one look, keeping the audience raw and close.

The set moved through most of her songs, including “rotten” and “everything you say,” but “wake me up” was my favorite performance of the night. Live, the distortion filled the warehouse as the light widened through the rain behind her. It was the point where the music and production lined up best. The song felt bigger, and the stage felt completely hers.

This wasn’t a typical warehouse show. startnowchangelater and pretty but wicked gave anna luna a stage that matched the care behind her music and image. The production put the whole night over the top and it felt like everyone in the room knew they were catching her early.
