A conversation with AYEGY — the New York artist bridging the gap between electronic and folk.
This conversation has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
AYEGY makes music that refuses to sit still. The New York artist built his name in the city’s club and experimental underground — a run of releases on the nexus8 label, a catalog that lives somewhere between dance music and something stranger — but his work keeps drifting toward quieter, more personal ground.
With 2024’s Blackthorn he started writing songs. With Evangeline, the album he’s readying for this summer, he says he’s gone all the way in: more songwriting, more of his folk influence, and the most vulnerable thing he’s made so far.
We caught up with him in Los Angeles to talk about the new record, the cities that shaped it, and what he reaches for away from the music.
Where does the name AYEGY come from?
I came up with it at summer camp when I was 15. It was Instagram handle that just stuck.
Your upcoming album Evangeline feels different from your previous releases. How do you see your sound evolving?
I’m leaning more into songwriting, and including more of my folk influence. It’s the most vulnerable project I’ve made thus far. I can’t wait for the world to hear it.
What do you want it to feel like?
Optimistic.
Where did it come from — New York or LA?
Mostly New York, a bit in LA. Environment affects the music you make — I made some of the songs I played in Los Angeles. One of those LA cuts is “God Loves His Ravens as Much as His Doves.
How do the LA and New York music scenes compare?
I don’t know too much about LA, but I know New York is usually at the forefront of whatever is popular before it reaches the rest of the world.
Favorite venue in each?
NYC: the Sultan Room.
LA: Pour Vous
Most memorable show you’ve ever played?
My Blackthorn album release show in November 2024.
What do you remember about it?
It was at the Broadway in Brooklyn. I put the lineup together, made up of artists I really admire. My mom was in town and brought our little dog Jazzy. All of my friends in New York were there too — it felt so wholesome.
Any upcoming shows?
Doing a mini tour in July — New York, Chicago, New York again, then LA.
What do you draw inspiration from outside of music?
Jesus Christ. Animals. Campfires. Root intrusion.
Current inspirations in music?
Hood and Dave Bixby.
All time inspirations?
M.I.A, Flyleaf, Chief Keef, Ozzy Osborne
