20 years after establishing club 222 Hyde as a cultural heartbeat of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, now-LA-based promoter Lights Down Low celebrates their 20th anniversary on 02.21 with a special warehouse show featuring Scottish club legend Optimo playing alongside co-founders Richie Panic and Corey Sizemore.

Before LDL relocated to LA in 2012, there wasn’t a strong underground club culture in the city — nightlife was dominated by clubs in Hollywood and DTLA that catered to a different crowd. Bottle service, tables, VIP hierarchies. The spectacle was the focus, rather than the sound.

Richie Panic and Corey Sizemore, once two rival promoters in the SF underground scene, moved their operations to Los Angeles to offer an alternative (and escape from the growing tech influence driving out the most interesting parts of the city.) Marathon sets in tightly-packed, dimly-lit warehouses running until the early hours of the morning. A breath of fresh air that helped propel a citywide movement and revive the underground.

As the warehouse scene grew, so did LDL’s profile. Their genre-agnostic approach — prioritizing energy over any single sound — and their instinct for platforming underground artists before they reach the masses have made them a consistent favorite within the scene and a trusted partner to both emerging and established artists from LA and abroad, including Nina Kravitz, Jamie XX, Ben UFO, Carl Craig, Honey Dijon, Roman Flügel, Marcel Dettmann, Mall Grab, Skin on Skin, Four Tet, Goldie, Bonobo, George Daniel, and Kelly Lee Owens.

For their 20th, LDL stayed true to this philosophy. Rather than chasing the biggest name or the broadest appeal, they stuck with what feels most LDL. In many ways Optimo Espacio’s weekly all-night sets at Glasgow’s legendary Sub Club were the blueprint for what LDL would become. A space for experimentation and open-minded programming that let the music breathe.

This party isn’t a victory lap or a nostalgia play. It’s a continuation of the same philosophy Richie and Corey have always contributed to the scene.

At the same time, you know that energy makes the party. At LDL, the energy is palpable. When you arrive you are discreetly ushered into the venue, let in the door, and then you feel it. Electricity coursing from person to person, transferred through dance moves and fleeting eye contact. Bass beating in your entire body and your heartbeat speeding up to match. The onset of profuse sweating and uncertainty about whether it’s origin lies in your incessantly moving feet or the haze of SFX overhead.

I hear all the time “no one in LA wants to dance”. Maybe they’re just at the wrong parties. The last time I went to an LDL show I danced until 4am and wasn’t even the last to leave. The energy is palpable. It’s physical, sweaty, frantic. It’s a lot of fucking fun, and if you haven’t been to one, you should.

Consistent with their tendency to flow through disparate genres and vibes, LDL follows up on their Optimo show with an electroclash party headlined by The Hellp, with support from rising LA alt-pop artist and Noah Dillon collaborator Avalon and americanrecycling, an up-and-coming dj and promoter hot with LA’s young creative scene.
